Somethin’ Special Is A’Brewin’

Wow.  WOW!

I’m truly amazed at the excitement, enthusiasm and passion that’s already being shown for SeenTh.at at such an early stage.  Over the past three days we’ve seen an incredible spike in sign ups, tweets about SeenTh.at, emails from fans, and comments on the blog.  Since we started accepting requests for beta invites in June, we’ve received hundreds of requests from across the world (59 countries represented!), and what we’re hearing is that there is a HUGE demand for what SeenTh.at can provide.

In order to help us get it right and not disappoint, let us know your thoughts in the comments below on which features you’re most looking forward to from SeenTh.at, as well as any features you don’t necessarily expect at release, but would like to see down the road.

This is a very exciting time for our team, and we appreciate your support and feedback.

I haven’t had the opportunity to use the beta version so this are fairly blind feedback. I am really looking forward to the ability to track the movies I’m watching, have already seen, would like to see and movies I own. Custom lists would be a plus. Rating and reviewing. Movie pages with plot summary, cast list, quotes, etc. Spoiler tags for reviews/comments. I am so excited about the potential awesomeness of this website. Can’t wait for it to go live! I’m hoping SeenTh.at does for movies what Goodreads has done for books.

Dio, we haven’t actually launched the beta yet, so nobody has had a chance to use the site yet :) We appreciate the feedback and look forward to being awesome for you!

I want to be able to easily check the films I saw, the films I plan to see, the movie I own. I’d like to have a messaging system between followers to be able to recommend a movie. Being able to rate them and add a critic would be great.
Being able to see the actors, integrate a biography, a summary, quotes, trailers, trivia/facts about the movie and news about it.
I have high hopes for this, good luck with everything!

Reading the first blog post was like reading my own conversation with friends regarding the lack of a killer-app-like movie site. Some of the features I’m most looking forward to include: rating system, full-length user reviews, short 140-character reviews with Twitter (and FB, I suppose) integration, recommendations to and from other users, RSS feeds of friends’ activities, upcoming release schedules, user-to-user communication abilities (forums/walls/twitter). An added bonus would be to track that you own the movie and in what format, etc.

  4. Piddle says:

At the release I’d love to have the ability to add movies to custom lists. It would be great if we were able to view our lists by certain attributes. Say, in the list of movies you haven’t seen but want to you can go through and view just the horror, or just the English language ones, or just the short ones, or maybe even a short English horror!

I sincerely hope the movie pages will have at least some basic information. Director, actors, length, rating, genre, language, plot summary, etc.

Some kind of recommendation engine. A “you rated this five stars so you may also like this” sort of thing. A place for more personal recommendations too of course.

Down the road, I think it’d be pretty rad if SeenTh.at kept track of what films we’ve seen on top lists, like AFIs, AA Best Pictures, Sundance Grand Jury Prize winners, etc. So kinda like iCheckMovies, but not as lame and limiting.

  5. If truth be told, what I’d like to see, is a site very much like GoodReads, but for films. I would like to be able to catalogue the films I have seen, set up lists for films I plan to or would like to see, and also have a function whereby I can update when I am watching a film, linking this directly to twitter and/or facebook.

Also, it would be useful to add friends on the site to make it a tad social media-esque, where you could see your friends “profiles” in which would be what films they have seen, what ratings they gave them and what they plan on seeing.

What I wouldn’t like to see is a website in the same vein as imdb. What I mean by this, is that I would prefer the direction of this site to focus on what you have seen, and not simply on the ratings afforded to such films by other people. Otherwise, you would end up with another clone of imdb (which there are already, too many of).

I must say, I am very much looking forward to this site, and can’t wait to try it out!

I have not had the opportunity to use the beta version. But I really am excited for this site. It seems very nice so far. I hope this site will have a good recommendation feature.
    Thanks
    Maria :)

Great comments so far everyone! Keep ‘em coming!

Hi there, I think the number 1 request would be an iPhone app.

Please drop me a line if you’re interested to discuss this. I tried emailing your support address a few weeks back but didn’t hear back from you guys. I’m in the midst of architecting an app that I think will compliment your service really nicely. Your eye for design is outstanding!

  9. Zachary says:

I love the function on goodreads where it sends you a notification email each month telling you if an author on your shelf has a new book coming out that month. It would be nice to select what you’re interested in: new movies with directors on your “shelf” or maybe even actors on your “shelf.”

    This is very exciting!

  10. Brian says:

Sounds very promising! Features I’d like to see (in rough order):
    - Rate movies I’ve seen
    - Review movies I’ve seen
    - Good summaries of my info (sort by date, rating, seen/not seen, etc)
    - Android app available
    - Mark movies as wanting to see
    - Info on movies (summary, actors, director, year, etc) like IMDB
    - Friends info
    - Discussion forums to discuss each movie
    - Recommendations

    Good luck!

Basically, everything Goodreads is but for movies. I like custom shelves for my own genres. I like the “currently reading” shelf on Goodreads, even though it doesn’t post to your FB wall (which is stupid). So something like a “currently watching” shelf that would then post what movie your watching to your FB wall would be fun, especially if you’re doing a marathon. One of the best parts of Goodreads is that I can keep track of things I want to read, which is REALLY helpful. I REALLY like the email updates about new books by authors I’ve read and have elected to follow. And if you’re like me and don’t have television and don’t actively seek out the info online, I don’t always know what movies from my favorite directors/writers/actors are coming out when. Recommendations are really important, the ability to recommend to friends and to get recommendations based on past activity (the recommendation system in Netflix only ever returned stuff I would never be interested in, however, so good luck with writing that algorithm). I haven’t really dug into Goodreads’s new recommendation system yet, but it looks promising from just glancing at it. I don’t like how on some sites the rating stars pop up a label like “liked it”, “really liked it”, “really really liked it”, “loved it”, “really loved it”.

  12. Virginia says:

Michael took the words out of my mouth: i’d like a movie site just like goodreads. Hope we can manually add movies because I normally don’t watch the big blockbusters and I’ve noticed on other sites they don’t have most of the movies I’ve seen.

  13. kim says:

Yes, another vote for the “Goodreads for movies”.
–> be able to check/rate movies I’ve seen and want to see
–> the way different versions/editions are managed: for instance, I own copies of the Star Wars classic trilogy on VHS and DVD, I want to list & rate them both but since they’re different versions of the same movies they should be kept “together” on the website – one movie but with different versions/editions.
    –> getting recommendations from friends
–> creating lists of my faves and the options to “work” on popular lists like the AFI ones, see how much % I’ve seen, compare with my friends etc
–> the option to import movies that are not in the database yet but this needs to be curated as well. If you allow anyone to add a movie (I don’t know how the database will be populated initially, via IMDB ids?) there should also be some people moderating (like Goodreads Librarians) that merge duplicates or handle the different editions or it becomes a big mess (see: allconsuming.net)

Like many, I haven’t found a movie site that matches my wishlist completely, but I have high hopes for this one :) Looking forward to the beta version!

Just can’t get the idea of “Goodreads for movies” out of my mind–It works so well for books, I love the idea of being able to use a similar setup for movies! And I know I’m echoing a lot of other comments, but some of my favorite features that I’m looking forward to:
-being able to look up past and upcoming movies and see descriptions
–also, I like how goodreads gives you the option to look at different book covers of the same book, sometimes that’s how I confirm that’s the book I was looking for, and perhaps something similar could be done with using different movie posters?
-write my own review, rate the movie, as well as add details like when I watched it, or how many times I’ve watched it
-being able to categorize whether I’ve watched the movie, or am planning to watch the movie
-being able to make my own lists/shelves
–also, it might be nice if there were pre-made genres ready to choose from (family, comedy, musical, horror, action, etc…)
-being able to “like,” “follow,” or friend other reviewers, comment on their reviews, or be notified when “friends” post new reviews
–like the ability/option to (and option not to) update other sites like twitter/facebook (and now maybe google+?) when I write a review
–I also like how when you search for a book, if you’ve reviewed it, goodreads not only has the description, but links your review so you can see it right away, and then below your review/comments, it lists other comments and reviews
-I like having a user profile, being able to tell others a little bit about myself, and also being able to decide how I want to share it, whether it’s public, private, or if only “friends” can see it
–I like having a user profile where I can add other places where people can connect to me, like twitter, facebook, google+, goodreads, my blog…

Things I would like to see:
-It would be nice to also be able to search actors and directors (similar to IMDB)
-would like to be able to add favorite actors and directors, as well as movies
–also might be neat if there were some kind of checklist aspect…In goodreads, you can look up the author, and it will list their books, which you can link to…Just thinking, it would be really cool if when you looked at that list, you were able to mark the ones you’ve already seen.
-would love to be able to do general searches by movie genre, like if I were searching for something to watch…or looking for something I couldn’t remember

Goodreads was exactly what I needed to start organizing all the books I’ve read, and I’m really looking forward to doing that for my movies with Seen That!!!!!

  15. nymfaux says:

sorry…thought of one more thing… I’m mainly interested in movies, but especially lately, a lot of big screen actors seem to have crossed over to the small screen–even some directors (and vice versa). And of course I always go back and forth over whether or not “made for tv” movies count as “real” movies…but when so many tv series are being put to dvd, and so many movies go straight to dvd, netflix, HBO, or Showtime…there seems to be a lot of overlap. I’ll be more than happy just to have a great place like Seen That to be able to organize my love of movies, but I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed if I could use Seen That to keep track of tv shows and tv movies, too! Thanks!!! :D

  16. Brooke says:

Will television shows be included, the way that they are included at IMDB? Obviously television shows are different from movies, but it could be nice to be able to keep track by season of shows you want to watch/own/have watched/want to rate. It’d be sort of analogous to comic book trade paperbacks on Goodreads – not exactly books, and they take up more entries than books, but are still included in the database. I’d love to see it, but also understand if it’s not part of your vision for the site!

    • John says:

This is a question we’ve wrestled with internally. One one hand, I see how movies and TV shows together on the same site makes perfect sense. It’s the same medium, and actors often cross over. On the other hand, there’s the difficulty of whether you want to track which episode of which season of which show you finished, rating each episode separately, or rating the entire season of a show, or perhaps rating the series as a whole. Because of the potential complexities, we’re starting with movies only at first. If we have success with that, we’ll definitely roll in television at a later date.

  17. Peter says:

And yet another “Goodreads” vote…and to call out a couple of their features that (hopefully) weren’t already mentioned and would be even more desirable for movie tracking:
    >> including Date Watched so movie consumption can be tracked for the year (or other timeframes)
    >> a cluster chart that displays the year of release of the movies I’ve seen so far in the year (or other timeframes)

    And lastly for now:
    >> a way to indicate multiple viewings, maybe a Times Seen (?)

Right now I’m trying to track what I’ve watched this year in a note page on my iPod touch, so this site can’t come fast enough, can’t wait (!)

  18. Kathy Cowley says:

In all honesty, what I want is for it to be the GoodReads of movies. I really just love GoodReads and all it’s features, and would love to be able to take a similar approaching to tracking, rating, reviewing, and sharing my movies.

  19. John says:

I’d like to see a “FlickChart” like feature, where I could vote between two movies and thus gradually build my own top-10 list.

I realize this is probably too core of a feature to simply slap it on top of your app, and requires some complicated algorithms to function properly, but I really prefer comparative voting over the usual 5 -star voting system that dominates ranking today. I think this could be potentially the most addictive part of the website.

  20. Lauren says:

I have to second what Peter said about a “date watched” b/c I’ve yet to see that on other sites and I think it would be useful. The option to put a movie on different user-created shelves (like GoodReads does). Also, a notes section that is separate from a user review so I can write what I liked about a movie without it being shared with others.

    • Shane Helm says:

Then you’re in luck… you’ll have a “movie journal” option to put in those types of things when you click that you’ve “seen that” movie. Publishing to the site’s overall Chatter will be optional. This will be separate and apart from entering a review; two different and distinct functions. We are pushing for these features in phase 1. Stay tuned…

  21. will I sound so redundant when I say I want it to be the Goodreads for movies? I am excited fot the beta version!!

Got something to say? Go for it!
